When did the car’s third brake light come about?

The third brake light, also known as the stop light, is one of the most important advancements in modern road safety. Its origin dates back to 1974, when psychologist John Voevodsky carried out a study in the United States to analyze how to improve braking visibility and reduce rear-end accidents, one of the most common types of collisions in traffic.

Voevodsky conducted an experiment with a fleet of taxis in San Francisco, incorporating an additional centered, elevated light at the rear of the vehicles. The results were overwhelming: taxis equipped with this light experienced a reduction of close to 50 percent in rear-end crashes. This finding showed that an additional brake optics, located at the height of the driving driver’s field of vision, better captured attention and helped prevent accidents.
