Tips to keep your windshield free of hail damage

AUSTIN, Texas — Tonight’s storm has the potential to wreak significant damage to your car. In fact, you could be looking at a bill of about $5,700 to fix it, according to AAA Texas.

At Low Price Auto Glass on North Lamar, they’re mostly seeing cars that have been broken into these days. Tonight, that might change with the possibility of hail. “It’s not good when it happens, but it’s good for us in a way when it happens,” said windshield installer Oscar Calderon. He says it’s going to at least run you about $300 out of pocket — if not more — to just replace the windshield. “Real fancy car, anywhere from six to seven, $800,” he said. “It’s because the fancier you want to get your car, the more sensors it comes with.”

AAA Texas says hail makes up about 9 percent of their claims every year. “Especially larger hail can cause significant damage to a vehicle. It can crack your windshield and usually hail doesn’t give much warning,” said spokesperson Daniel Armbruster, who has some advice to keep your car free of hail damage. “Park your vehicle in a covered area, but of course, if you’re stuck out, there is not much you can do, you can try to use a hail blanket.”

It is advisable that Oscar says to take it seriously. “The best way to kind of avoid it is cardboard, cover your car from back to front and, if not, get some really thick blankets.”
